Who we are
Mercurae Limited is a private limited company registered in England and Wales under company number 12780967. Our registered office is at 2nd Floor, 10 Rathbone Place, London W1T 1HP. References on this website to "Mercurae", "we" or "us" are to Mercurae Limited.
Our regulatory status
Mercurae Limited is not authorised or regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) or by any other legal services regulator. This is because Mercurae does not carry on any of the "reserved legal activities" set out in section 12 of, and Schedule 2 to, the Legal Services Act 2007. These are: the exercise of a right of audience, the conduct of litigation, reserved instrument activities (such as conveyancing), probate activities, notarial activities and the administration of oaths. Only businesses carrying on reserved legal activities are required to be authorised.
Our services are confined to non-reserved legal work: corporate, commercial, employment, data protection, intellectual property and related advisory services for businesses and other organisations. We do not provide services to consumers.
Our solicitors
The members of our team listed below are solicitors of England and Wales, individually authorised and regulated by the SRA in their personal capacity. You can verify the status of any solicitor on the SRA Solicitors Register at sra.org.uk/consumers/register.
Not everyone at Mercurae is a solicitor. The role of each team member is shown on our Team page, and we will always make clear who is carrying out work on your matter and in what capacity.
Use of the title "Partner"
We use "Partner" to denote a senior solicitor of Mercurae Limited. Its use does not mean that Mercurae is a partnership within the meaning of the Partnership Act 1890, or that any individual is carrying on business in partnership with any other.
What our status means for you
Because Mercurae Limited is not an SRA-authorised body, the following points apply and are also explained in the engagement terms we agree with each client:
Insurance. We are not required to hold professional indemnity insurance meeting the SRA's minimum terms and conditions, which apply only to SRA-authorised firms. We do, however, maintain professional indemnity insurance in respect of our legal services. Details of the amount and scope of our cover are available on request.
SRA Compensation Fund. Clients of Mercurae do not have access to the SRA Compensation Fund, which is available only to eligible clients of SRA-authorised firms.
Complaints. If you are unhappy with any aspect of our service, please raise it with your usual Mercurae contact or email enquiry@mercurae.com and we will address it under our complaints procedure, a copy of which is available on request. A complaint about the professional conduct of an individual solicitor may be made to the SRA. If you fall within a category of "eligible complainant" (broadly, individuals, micro-enterprises and certain small charities and trusts), you may also be able to refer a complaint about services carried out or supervised by one of our solicitors to the Legal Ombudsman (legalombudsman.org.uk) once our own procedure has been exhausted. Most of our clients are businesses that sit outside the Legal Ombudsman's scheme; we will confirm the position that applies to you in our engagement terms.
Further information
The basis on which we act for each client, including scope, fees, insurance and complaints, is set out in our engagement terms. If anything on this page is unclear, or you would like further information about our regulatory position, please contact enquiry@mercurae.com.
